Best ever student visit
A group of ambitious and inquisitive students from Lancaster University travelled to Furness for an afternoon of company visits and an evening reception on Wednesday 19th November.
The visit – labelled ‘On the Bus to Barrow’ – had been organised as part of 2008 Enterprise Week and was hailed a great success by all involved.
A record number of students enjoyed company tours with Kimberly Clark and James Fisher and an evening reception to meet other local employers including BAE Systems, Diamould, Forge Europa and Three SL.
So happily were the students networking with these recruiting companies that they had to be enticed out of the Duddon Suite at Abbey House to catch their bus home.
John Barker, project manager at Furness Enterprise and the Encouraging Entrepreneurship in Furness project said:
“This was the most successful visit we’ve ever had. The two host companies delivered informative and lively presentations, including a vessel tour on the dockside from James Fisher and then it was on to meet more employers that evening. The atmosphere at the evening reception was buzzing; conversations between students, companies and members from the FYP were happening in every corner!”
One of the employers at the event was engineering company, Diamould. HR manager, Claire Kneale, said:
“It was very worthwhile. My student interns enjoyed it as well and were able to give an overview of what they’re involved with – hopefully we’ll get a fair few applying for next year.”
Students Laura Blakeley and Ellen Bishop had this to say:
“The entire day was an extremely valuable experience”
“I’ve told a lot of my friends about how great last night’s event was, so hopefully you’ll be seeing or hearing from a few more or us from Lancaster soon.”
With thanks to the host companies, Furness Young Professionals, attending companies and Lancaster University for ensuring such a successful event.
