Furness Young Professionals finish enterprise week with a bang!

The first ever Global Enterprise Week took place last week – seven days of inspiring activities and events taking place around the country, all focussed on encouraging people to be enterprising and entrepreneurial. The launch event was held at London’s South Bank Centre, attended by Gordon Brown, the Dragon’s from the Den and also Imran Hakim, founder of iTeddy who recently visited Barrow. Sally Broom who co-runs FYP also attended and was photographed with the Prime Minister and Dragon James Caan looking very talkative!

On Friday 21st November the Furness Young Professionals decided to run their own enterprise event for sixth form students in Barrow, in the style of The Apprentice television series.

Groups from Furness College and Barrow 6th Form competed to be selected by ‘Alan Sugar’ (played by David Lurie of BAE Systems) and his fellow judges as The Furness Apprentice 2008. The title includes a top work placement for one week in Barrow as well as a cash prize. Winners were Rachel Hoggarth of Furness College and Matthew Quegan of Barrow 6th Form College.

All participants were awarded prizes for their fantastic input of ideas into how Barrow as a town can better meet the needs of young people. Furness Young Professionals will now be meeting with those who took part to develop their ideas and put some into action. This may include music gigs for 16–18 year olds, new venues for under-18s to socialise and running weekend trips and activities that make the most of Furness.

After all, that’s what FYP is all about, making the most of what’s on our doorstep, which clearly includes a group of innovative, driven young people who want to see change in Barrow!
